Storie di superconduttori (Supercon stories)

Editor's comment: The stories which follow will be appreciated by those who produce, maintain and use superconducting magnets or, as they are generally called, supercons. They were written by Vanni Piccinotti, an expert engineer with a lifetime experience in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) instrumentation. He was spurred to writing them by reading my overly conservative (according to him!) NMR blog entry. He wrote in Italian (black) which I have translated in English (blue); both versions are presented here. I have also inserted a few comments which appear in green italics.

Re: Superconducting magnets: earthquakes, quenches and other mishaps ...

Energized 200 MHz supeconducting magnet

Ciao Stan,
... posso aggiungere le mie modeste esperienze.
... let me add my modest experiences.

We have moved without any problem innumerable energized Varian magnets up and down through buildings, across industrial establishments and university institutes. In the latest cases I used to leave a sample tube with D2O in the probe. Then I would reconnect everything and switch ON, often finding the instrument already locked ! Barely an hour of shimming and the machine was operative again. As you know, Varian 200 and 300 MHz magnets were small, light and compact and therefore easy to transport (see the photo; the two spavaldous youngsters are my son Andrea and his friend, hired for the occasion).

The only mishap: once we have passed too close to an electricity panel and the floor's magneto-thermic switches tripped. Evidently, they do not discriminate much and trip whenever they feel a field, be it AC or DC. The whole floor went dark, the Client became a bit upset, but the magnet barely noticed. What nice things are superconductors!

It is quite different for [truly] high fields: the magnets are big, heavy and have a lot of dispersed field, at least those produced before the advent of ultrashields. I have no notice of magnets stronger than 9 T having been ever moved while energized. In any case, the policy of Manufacturers is simple and does not admit exceptions: magnets are moved deenergized and warm. Only when the distance is very short, they might move them cold, but never with the field on.

Quenches and associated damages: I never heard about a magnet damaged by a spontaneous quench (and you can bet that they do happen!) or because of lack of helium. There was a magnet which died because of a too intense embrace with a helium gas cylinder [in italian, the latter is "bombola" and its gendre is female] but the demise was due to mechanical causes: the strong impact grossly deformed the cryostat and put into contact at least two internal dewars, causing a total loss of thermal isolation and making it impossible to ever again cool down the magnet.

I know about a case which involved a horizontal Oxford imaging magnet which attracted a 5 m^3 rotative Edwards pump. The calm storeroom employee who was moving the pump remained frozen for five minutes, standing there with just the pump handle in his hand and a strange look in his eyes, before they managed to convince him to let go [of the handle]. The pump was then tied to a forklift tractor (with a rope and keeping a safe distance) and, pulling slowly, detached from the magnet. Which magnet issued a buff from its helium boil-off ports, but that was the only indication that it has noticed anything unusual - as far ar I know it is still energized and working well.

Another brief story: A chemical Company and an Oxford 7.04T magnet, installed - as usual - in a basement. During an exceptional storm the basement gets flooded by an emulsion of water, heating oil and other fluids (of organic origin and of nauseating smell ...). Luigi Mattavelli [a Varian service manager] arrives, ready for the worst, and finds the magnet peacefully bobbing atop the dense fluid. The field is still there and the helium boiloff rate is regular. The magnet, moved to the courtyard and washed with a garden hose, gives no sign of having noticed. Luigi would like to try it but, of course, the console is unusable so he has to give up. It was later deenergized, warmed up and reenergized again, without any problem.

I would have a few more stories, but at this point I am really convinced: superconductive magnets are sentient quantum beings. They do whatever they like and whenever they wish, paying no attention to the labours of the poor technician who circles around them and who, sincerely, merits nothing else since (at least in my case) he has no idea of what he is really doing.

Ciao, Vanni
